Captive is a powerful documentary that delves into the controversial issue of orcas in captivity. The film explores the profound physical and psychological effects of confinement on these highly intelligent marine mammals. Through a blend of interviews, archival footage, and  cinematic B-roll, Captive examines the ethical implications of removing orcas from their natural environments. Stripping them of their complex social structures and natural behaviours.

As the narrative unfolds, Captive follows the uncertain journey of Wikie and her son Keijo, two orcas housed at Marineland in France. When the facility announces its closure, their fate becomes unclear. Raising urgent questions about what happens to captive orcas when their enclosures shut down. The story of Wikie and Keijo adds a deeply personal dimension to the broader issue, highlighting the complexities of finding humane and sustainable solutions for individuals who have spent their lives in captivity.

The documentary also contrasts captivity with the experience of observing orcas in the wild, showcasing the profound rewards of seeing them in their natural habitat. Ultimately, Captive seeks to raise public awareness, challenge outdated industry practices, and imagine a more compassionate future for these majestic creatures.
